Originally we had planned to celebrate it either with an extended weekend in New York City or at the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina. Unfortunately Daniel had to work on the fourth of July so our plans took a detour. At the last moment we decided to drive up to Richmond Va. I figured it is our state capital and full of history (it was the capital for the Confederate states during the Civil War), there has to be something interesting to do.
Its about a 2 hour drive give or take. On our way up, Daniel and I stopped at an antique/statuary store in Williamsburg. I had never been there before and Daniel had been wanting to show me the place for quite awhile. Unfortunately I didnt take any photos of the interior because thats where all the really cool stuff was. I did take a few photos of the statues outside.

While Daniel was checking out the bulk stone which we would like to use for the patio that we will eventually build in the backyard, I was picking out some statues that I thought would annoy the neighbors. I thought this full scale antlered herbivore was a definite possibility. Although in our neighborhood, someone is likely to get drunk and mistake it for the real thing and run for their rifle.

I thought this monkey would do the trick but I dont think even I could sleep with that thing outside the window.

This dragon was my favorite but with a $3000 price tag I had to pass.

When we finally got to Richmond we spent more time trying to dodge raindrops than sightseeing. It hasnt rained for months, why this weekend?
Saturday we walked around Cary Street and ate dinner. Carytown is a little area around VCU full of cute boutiques and restaurants. Unfortunately rain cut our adventure short. I got these two photos right before the bottom fell out. One is of the Jefferson Hotel, the other of a cool mural we saw while we were driving around, one of the many little details that make Richmond unique.

Sunday, before we left richmond, we visited Shockoe Bottom where this old train station caught our interest. There was an outdoor market next to it where we browsed and bought a few pieces of antique glass. On our way home we stopped at Crate and Barrel and I imagined picking out all new furniture for the house, wouldnt that be nice. Overall, it was a nice low key little getaway.
