Why I hate Virginia Beach #1

Ok if anyone knows me at all, they know that I can't stand Viriginia Beach. So I am going to start a count of reasons why I hate the Beach on here.
#1) This morning I was driving to work which is in Virginia Beach, and I noticed that there were about six or seven cops pulling people over in the lanes leaving the Beach and absolutely no cops in the lanes going to Virginia Beach. Its the start of Labor Day weekend and Virginia Beach has to get its qouta of speeding tickets. So instead of interferring with the tourists, they prey on the locals leaving town. What kind of crap is that?

  4. This place is the armpit of the East Coast! I came here to work at my miserable high-paying job! This place as ruined my life since there is literally nothing to do (I hate the water), and the dating scene sucks. I made more friends and did more stuff during the 12 weeks of accumulated work-travel I've been on in the past few years than I have here in this awful place. Since B.O. has ruined this economy, looks like I'm stuck here for while!

  10. Virginia Beach is horrible compared to the West Coast. From the time it takes to get anywhere (at least 20 minutes for anything, the hills that they call the Appalachian Mountains (check out the Rocky Mountains), the fake food (Many cultures from around the world go out west), the weather (the west is beautiful), the traffic (everything's fast and easy to get too, and people don't brake everywhere they go, THEY DRIVE except for CA), to the people (people out west are much more happier and friendlier). I just don't understand why anyone would want to live in Virginia Beach.

    2. Get a clue Anonymous. I lived in WA for 6 years and aside from the 2months of beauty in the summer (if you want to call it that, doesn't get hot enough to buy an AC unit), that placed sucked. Everybody takes antidepressants to cope with the lack of sun and liberal economics. Then there's California, it is a beautiful land but the taxes are among the highest in the country, the state govt is broke, and the people are either rich eccentric superficial douche bags or poor wierdos barely making a living. Not to mention the wild fires, mudslides, earth quakes, etc. And please don't hate on the Appalachians because they aren't 10,000ft tall. At least their look varies throughout the seasons, yeah seasons, there are 4 of them we enjoy here on the east. What color are your tall rocks in the fall? Grey? Hurry, get my camera before the grey falls off. The West isn't perfect by a long shot. I have still have oil stains in my shoes from swimming in the beach off Santa Barbara where you can see the off shore oil rigs beautify the skyline... NOT! VA > CA.

  11. Everyone here should kill themselves as soon as possible! Especially the all caps guy who dropped out of school in the third grade because he couldn't pass English. If you don't like something get away from it rather than just complaining about it and whining. VA Beach doesn't suck, you suck. You have no friends and no one likes you. If I were you I would be miserable in Va Beach or anywhere else that I was because you are a miserable failure at life.

  12. I've lived here for 9 years and really have tried to like it. I even purchased a house and thought that would make me happy but Virginia Beach just doesn't compare to San Diego. So my plan is to make the move back to where my heart has always been ~ west coast.

  18. I 100% agree with the previous comment. I also grew up in this godawful town (born and raised) and after 20 years I HATE IT HERE. I've been back and forth from school in Atlanta, then coming back here and like you said, you never realize how miserable this place is once you've lived somewhere else. It's boring, no one here wants to do anything with their lives. As soon as I get enough money for a place in ATL, Im getting the hell outta this city.

  19. Vb is the wackest of wack cities that does a great job fooling ppl on how greaf it is. That is untill you actually move there and you see the true side instead of what advertisement brings. Vb and the ppl in it are so stuck on themselves and how great of a city it is but they have no clue. Im 20 and just moved down there last semester when i was 19 with my boy and attended TCC for a semester, and i swear, after about a month or two of living there, school was the only thing holding me back from moving to where my heart is.... The west side, Phx AZ! ReplyDelete
  22. I hate the Police here and how everything is about money I am glad I am not alone when I say this place can kiss my ass

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've lived here way too long... hated it when I arrived (some 20+ years ago), hate it even more now. The people are rude, the jet noise sucks, they can't drive for shit.... not to mention the beach?!!!!? Really???!!! The military dumps their waste (meaning shit, piss, and whatever other ungodly materials you can think of) right off our coast. They even have bacterial warnings at times, that the bacteria levels are too high to safely swim!

The police will look for some bullshit reason to harass you (mainly at the ocean front), you can't even have an opened container of beer in your own yard! Yes, that's right... if you are within public view, drinking a beer in your own front or back yard (the key being public view, which can be neighbors), the police can and WILL issue you a summons!

Unfortunately, I have to wait for my husband to retire until we can get the hell out... but getting the hell out of this shit hole is what we will be doing!

It's dirty here, there is an out of control homeless population (that you will notice standing on the medians with signs at major intersections), everyone likes to mind everyone else's business but their own. God forbid you are an attractive woman walking down the "strip", you can be rest assured that some redneck wanna be bitch will holler some nasty adjective out the window at you just because you decided to take a walk.

Racial tensions are high, crime is much higher than what is reported.... take a look at a lot of the ratings for hotels in the area... DIRTY! This is a poor excuse for a resort area, it's a "poor man's" resort at best. You might as well get together with a few hillbilly's, a keg, and a bucket of kentucky fried chicken and call that a vacation.

I can't wait to get the hell out of here! Virginia Beach and the whole Commonwealth sucks

    ReplyDelete
  24. I hate the entire Commonwealth bitch named Virginia. All I've experienced there was pain and boredom. All the statements made above are valid. To those who are pondering relocating, get the hell out while you still can..I did. Fuck Virginia Beach(Hillbilly's Paradise).

    ReplyDelete
  25. Virginia Beach is a police state run by a bunch of good ole' boys who look as though they all come from the same inbred family. There is very little diversity here. There are some blacks, but few Hispanics and Asians. Why in the world would immigrants want to come to this God-awful place? The people around here are racist and xenophobic--really backward in their thinking, if they think at all. The people here are lame as hell.

The whole state is called the "Communistwealth" because of the totalitarian nature of the government. Then you have all the bible belt a-holes who run the state behind the scenes. Pat Robertson calls this place home, come on.

Ex military who decide to stay here (stupid decision) flood the local job market. This place is one of the worst job markets in the nation for a metro area of its size. Private-sector wages here are low.

Then there is the obnoxious jet noise at all times of the day. The Gayvy, I mean Navy can't seem to find another place on the East Coast to place loud noisemakers--who would want them near them? Nobody. Jacksonville didn't want these jets back when they had the chance. Does anyone blame them?

This city and the whole state for that matter has got to be the worst in America. Things are so bad in Virginia that 150 years ago the western part of the state broke off and formed their own state: West Virginia, which is the better Virginia; and that ain't sayin' much.

The people are so stupid and ignorant around here that they can't properly drive a car and follow the rules of the road. They have got to be the worst drivers in the whole friggin nation of ours.

Virginia is for Losers!!!! NOT lovers.

Advice: Don't come here if you can avoid it. This place is very depressing. If you live here try to get out ASAP. Seek a job out of state. Save your money and move. Find a friend or relative in another state and see if they can help you move--whatever it takes. This place will literally suck the life blood out of you.

    1. Everything you say is true excpet one point needs clarification:when the navy built the airbase there was nothing else around so the noise wasn't a problem. At the time, most of what is now VB was rural Princess Anne county, VB city was just the strip at the oceanfront. The city is who messed up, by allowing urban (rather, suburban) development to build up around the base.

      Delete
    2. That's true. I heard they the Navy tried to PREVENT development around the air base.

Of course, the moneyed folks wanted to cash in and build base housing -- more a less the same thing in a bedroom community for the bases like Virginia Beach.Lynnhaven Mall was opposed as a plan could go down there. Nothing stops the city planners from approving stuff like this.It fills the coffers and more city workers can join the 100 K club.

  27. So I'm not alone in this hate for this area. I hate Hampton Roads as a whole. I lived in Virginia Beach but moved to Portsmouth/Suffolk area to get away from the crime and bull shit. I have no desire to live at the beach, go to the beach or frequently visit the beach. I can't wait for the day I cross state lines and leave this God forsaken area.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I was born and raised in this city. My ancestors were from here. I can't wait to move far, far away! As I write this, I am being blasted by the damn jets from Oceana. This whole eastern part of the city is ruined by this noise. The low frequency vibration, incessant noise and pollution is making people sick. The clowns we have for "representatives" give the navy a blank check. When a F-18 crashed, as anyone could have predicted, the politicians knocked each other down appologizing to the navy for people and their homes being in the way. How dare anyone not love the noise and danger! Complain about "The Sound of Freedom"?! How DARE you!...Next you'll say manure smells bad.

This is not a city. Its a military base with a tourist trap near the ocean. The traffic, crime and rudeness of many people make this a miserable place to live. I remember when this used to be a fairly decent place before the local opportunists started mining the money and turned this into a suburban disaster area. The land of SUV's, lawnmowers and jet noise...I look forward to getting the hell out of all of Turdwater!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. YES, YES, YES! AGREED! I was out of town when the jet crash happened (I saw it on the news from my motel room and was like... what?!) and knew that even if no one was killed (which this was the case) that everything would go back to "business as usual" with the Navy!
I get so angry when I see those "I Love Jet Noise" bumper stickers! And, what gives with all the vanity plates?

  29. I have lived here since 2006 (grew up in the Midwest) and I actually liked Virginia Beach at first that with the amount of things to do and see in the surrounding areas of Hampton Roads. The military was somewhat of a concerned (we moved here due to my boyfriend's job/non-military)... then 2010 came and the jet noise started to get so bad that I wonder now if I have hearing damage! I feel like I can't enjoy the outside anymore because no matter where I go in this crappy city or at the oceanfront the jets are there! I doubt anything will change even with the sequestration. I have grown to hate it and each day I tell myself that I would love to leave tomorrow and never come back to this pathetic area (or this state). I'm planning to move out West...

  31. Lived here for 30 years. Local politics here are ridiculous and keep getting worse. Houses are so overpriced I can hardly afford to live here anymore. If I'm able, I'm selling next year and moving my family elsewhere. There are plenty of more affordable areas within Virginia, Maryland, and NC to consider. The city continually tries to bring in major sports markets but have been unsuccessful. The city council needs to wake up and realize that we are not a Seattle, OKC, Miami etc... and realize that people cannot afford these sorts of entertainment until overall general salaries are raised. City employees and private employees are truly compensated below national averages. If you do decide to stay in the area, consider Chesapeake or Suffolk. At least there you can get a decent house!

  34. There are only three ways to make a living in Virginia Beach...1) active duty military. 2) Civil Service (better be retired military to obtain a position. The good ole boys take care of their own, ya know?) 3) Open an auto dealership, ice cream stand, etc.

Yeah, the area talks about attracting large corporations. Unfortunately, they've been talking about it for 40 years and it still hasn't happened!!!

I moved here due to BF being in military and I just hate it, I did not enjoy my job, the traffic and drivers are horrible and it is way to over crowded. Why is it that even the library here has 20 million people with full parking lot on a Tues at 10 am? I cant go anywhere without 50 million others being there, cops pull people over like crazy, don't even get me started on driving through the tunnels here, there are those speed and red light cameras EVERY where and the people here are RUDE as it seems they hate it here too. The only thing I like about this place are the parks. IM so glad my lease is up in one month and my BF has just retired from the military so we are moving back north east...TG

My fiancé is Navy and he got stationed here alittle over a year ago and it has been the most miserable year in my life. The traffic and drivers are so terrible I rarely even want to leave the house. The jobs here(if you can find one worth having) are life sucking and by the time you use all your gas in traffic isn't worth what you're getting paid, oh and the taxes here are OUTRAGEOUS, so good luck having any money for anything. Ever. I've met a few people but have yet to make an actual friend while being here. It's definitely a military area and nothing left for civilians. I am from Jacksonville Florida, born and raised. I thought it was getting over crowded there but after being here I would jump at the chance to go back home in a heartbeat. As soon as my fiancé retires we will be going back to Florida. And I cannot wait!!!! It's a lonely and miserable place here.

  46. I moved up here to be with my fiancé but I've really hated it here. If I knew everything I know now I'm not sure I would have moved here in the first place. It's gotten to the point that when our lease is up I'm honestly thinking of moving back home for awhile (NC).
Where do I begin? The constant jet noise, the drivers, the whole beachy tourist atmosphere (and the fact I REALLY miss my family) are all key components of my dislike. However my main complaint is due to the fact that the area is absolutely flooded with cover bands. I'm a musician and while I'm ok with doing and playing covers, I really want to be in a band where we can play originals and become the next big band but no one wants to do that here or listen to it. The people that are talented either have their own thing going on already or they want to just do covers to make money. Sometimes I feel if I have to play my heart out to one more inattentive drunk tourist/local audience I'm going to pull a Katniss Everdeen and fire an arrow into the crowd.
All that being said, it's nice to know that there are other people who feel the same way. For various reasons I can't be open about this stuff on fb so it's nice to vent here. Here's to hoping we all get out of this place:-)

    1. I totally know how you feel. While I'm not in a band I am a big fan of music and being from Brooklyn the local bands are what makes the area that I lived what it is. People say that we are assholes but at least we don't act like F*ing drunken imbeciles when we go to see a band that shit annoys the hell out of me. I would get the hell out of VA Beach and go up to Richmond at least you'll have a chance and the people there will appreciate your talents. Keep The Faith!!!

    2. I hear you being from San Diego there is like zero entertainment here...just a bunch of stuffy people. A lot of women here who think they know fashion. They don't. They wear jeans, old tshirts and icky tennis shoes. They dress terrible. A lot of angry people here, the drivers are rude. No friendly folks much at all.

    4. Yeah the music scene in VA is straight trash. Six years later and what you said still rings true. Theres talented people, but they waste it in civer bands. And they got the nerve to charge $10 at the door. Not paying $10 to hear some 3rd rate cover of something that was big 30+ years ago. Of course due to the pandemic, we cant do shit, so well see where were at when it opens back up..or maybe I wont even bother.

  47. So I had to reply because your story sounds somewhat like mine. I moved here in July 2014 to be with my fiancé. I thought I had done really good research on VB but after moving here, it's been one disappointment after another. First thing I noticed is how no one seems able to communicate in a clear and concise manner. Everyone seems confused when asked a question. Second, I noticed how rude and negative everyone is. Being from Colorado, I'm used to some optimism and decency in people. You'd think it would kill people here to make a joke. Third, I noticed how everyone is out to make an easy buck. Being a foody, I've tried most of the nicer restaurants in town only to realize most of them are a facade and the food is horrible. The crime and the racism is something I've never experienced before. There's been several criminal incidents by my house in the few short months I've lived here. And we experienced reverse racism on one occasion. I'm still hanging in there trying to find something good about this place but I find myself missing my family and sometimes think about going back just to get some relief from this place.

    1. I noticed the racism too, it's pretty hard core. Being from the West I never experienced it until I moved here. It's very strongly racially problematic here, especially on the road. Very angry and aggressive drivers who appear to have a racial vendetta.

  48. Virginia Beach really does suck! I have live here for over 40 years and watched the piss poor job of planning and development. The homes here are way overpriced and the jet noise is totally unacceptable. I am tired of all of the assholes saying that jet noise is the sound of freedom. Bullshit. I support the military, but flying overhead all day and night over a heavily populated area like this is Bullshit. It is unsafe, it causes one hell of a lot of damage. Tell me that the air around here is full of dumped and spent fuel. There is no way that the air is not polluted by these jets flying day and night. Why not practice on the US, Mexico boarder and fly low like they do here, to scare the shit out of all the criminals that are illegally invading our country! Ok, I feel a little better now, goodbye.

  49. Can't figure out how I managed to live in VB for so long. I just can't. I pretty much was raised here and did college and graduate school in VA. It has been such a blessing to relocate to the Midwest for employment reasons. Every time I visit family and return to my childhood home, all the negatives to VB hit me like a barrage of bullets between the eyes such that the journey to the non-Virginia home is a very, very happy one. (When can we leave?) There was a beach community quaintness to it in the 1970's but with growth, the poor city planning/development created problems with traffic congestion and overall lack of personality. It is not a pretty town. There are endless mini mall strips of chain establishments interspersed with the usual Targets, Kmarts , and mega malls. There are too few historic landmarks to lend warmth much less an identity to the series of high-priced snoot-ass neighborhoods/ developments. In the small towns of VA, I might pick up on that concept of Southern hospitality but NOT here. As a whole, the people are as friendly as the east coast driving. I guess it just became obvious to me once I moved away but there's definitely an iciness to the stares even in my old neighborhood and it's not hidden too deep under the fake southern accent. I never feel Southern Hospitality until I get to the Carolinas or Georgia. I never did mind too much the military sounds though just because I appreciate the technology and a lot of the military folks are down to earth. Some of the military officers you meet in the civilian setting though...yea, I totally get why they have domestic issues. And yes, because of the military presence, good luck sharing your political views. Those officer types can go on and on how they've seen the world and know all kinds of people. Whatever. There's only one view around here according to them. Global hopping was lost on them in my opinion. Even once they retire from the military and become consultants...they talk to you, a civilian, as if you clean their toilets. They contribute tremendously to my dislike of this town. Doesn't help that I'm a magnet for these type of folks but geez, I keep running into these wackadoodle power trippers every damn visit home. And bar/restaurant scene? Where? I found one pub with [gasp] friendly people so they get my business and two restaurants with a delightful menu. The rest are wannabes. The oceanfront to me is very meh. The private beaches on the Chesapeake Bay lost their appeal along with the town. Yes they're clean but something is missing. Even if you are just a visitor, you still have to buy a fishing license. .. Are you kidding me? I actually have to visit Eastern Shore to feel the love. That's kinda sad. Goodbye Virginia Beach. You are so ruined. You can never go home. Good to vent but damn, I'm kinda sad now. Oh and FU, you "self - important [wackadoodle] puffers." (Borrowed from one of the first posts.) There. I said it. I'm kinda happy again.

That is pretty much this place. Rough and tumble crowd.

My mom was robbed at knife point.

My co-workers dad was beaten in his own front yard.

    Bed bugs at the movies.

And the drivers are the worst in the world-- uneducated masses with cars from their Navy salaries. I think that's what makes it the pits. The Navy. Those patriots, God bless em. They serve themselves. They own the road. They conquered this area, while losing wars.

  57. I really hate to badmouth Virginia Beach, but as a long time resident of nearly 25 years it is damn nigh impossible to counter all these accusations. First off, and I think the most annoying aspect that most locals feel, are the damn tourists and the row upon row of hotels dotting the OceanFront landscape...this city seems to favor the catering to the outta towners far more than the ones who actually make up the population. VB tries wayyyyyy too hard to be like other more mainstream destination tourist hotspots like another commenter said...and this leads directly into a loss of identity! The over emphasis on putting tourists first and foremost before this Commonwealth's native folks have really given the image of true fakeness and insincerity that is undeniably resonated throughout among the population that does said catering to the tourists. Another thing. The constant planning of building a sports arena at the oceanfront! This has been on the drawing boards for a long time now and nothing has ever gotten past said drawing boards! As if the main roads around the Oceanfront aren't congested enough during Summer, now the folks living in the surrounding area would have to deal with even MORE drivers than ever?! And not to mention bringing in some "unsavory people", the kind that would bring unwanted attention/drama to an Oceanfront that already deals with the a holes and jerks during its busy seasons. Oh, and one more thing I'd like to add. I've had people tell me matter of factly that racism is virtually nil in VB. BULLSHIT!!! White folks mainly stay with their own color, and the same goes for Black folks. If there is really any interracial mingling happening about, it would be at a place of work...almost everywhere that I go, be it at Mt.Trashmore, at the mall, the movies, even the grocery stores...Black and White people, for whatever intents and purposes, generally prefer to be with their own kind. And here's a piece of memory I'd like to add: when I was a child back in the mid 1980's, I would come to VB with my family to visit my grandparents who lived on shore drive, from 1983 to 1985. And even so I was 4,5, 6 years old during those times, I had nothing but the best fondest memories EVER! People would say that it doesn't count judging a city with being so young of age, but those memories I have make me wonder what the hell has happened to this city?! And even so they are now nothing but memories, at least I was super happy and optimistic to have enjoyed those times. I wish that kind of happiness and vibrancy existed now in this city, at least from my point of view. I'm a 37 year old man that have been left jaded and somewhat shunned because of circumstances, but I fervently hope that the wonders I have felt from over 30 years ago will once again surface and stay for good.

  58. What you guys are saying is on point. I lived in Virginia Beach for about 1 year before I moved to Florida. Beach? Virginia beach is hardly a beach worth seeing... you aren't missing anything if you never go there your entire life. The crime there is miserable, rain never stops, flooding always happens and worst of all... they can't even make you happy in the slightest by giving you some nice architecture because the buildings by the beach are all REALLY UGLY square boxes. In Florida the condos are at least modern, white, pristine and many are covered in glass. In Virginia Beach the condos and hotels are the same color as the sand... a dirty yellow color. Everyone kept talking up Virginia Beach to me like it was the greatest thing but I was utterly disappointed. Now I live in a real beach town and Virginia has absolutely nothing on California and Florida.

  59. I went to Frank W. Cox High School and I can tell you it is just as shitty as the rest of Virginia Beach. In my 4 years there I was offered illegal drugs on many ocassions, seen some of the most unqualified people somehow become teachers, and worst of all was the fact that it had the classic clique situation that you see in cheesy teenage movies. I liked the band program though.
    P.S. Virginia Beach sucks

    ReplyDelete
  60. Adding my 2 cents... Virginia Beach sucks!! Lemme see... Town Center. Seriously??? What good does that do? For this former local now living in Texas (Fort Worth), who lived in that wannabe tourist trap for ~30 years (left in 2015 to Indiana, but then came back [bad idea]... finally left for good in April 2016)... NOTHING, that's what. Homeless folk can't catch a break. And the hotels there are prime homeless apartments in the winter at the oceanfront. (Trust me. I lived in two one winter.) But come May... the cops'll conspire with the hotels managers and evict everyone to the streets come first week of May. (First they'll try to raise the rates to hopefully convince them to GTFO.) And liquor only in state run "ABC stores?" WTF? Did you know Virginia was the first state after the repealment of prohibition to enact that restrictive law? (It's on Wikipedia, "Alcoholic Beverage Control State") And can't buy beer past midnight? Texas, it's 3 AM.

I'm glad I left the Communistwealth. Texas drivers might be bad and the speed limit on I-30 is 85 MPH but can't go faster than 55 (unless you're on I-64 past the Virginia Beach-Chesapeake line... where it only increases 10 MPH to 65)? But TxDOT is a lot more forgiving and the drivers here might be like they're at Texas Motor Speedway on I-30, I-20, I-35W, I-35E and I-820... but hardly any reckless accidents. I bet Virginia drivers won't last 5 minutes on I-820.

And agreed with the commenter who said can't walk anywhere without someone yelling at you from their car window.

    Stupid town. Glad I left.

    1. Hmmm. I recognize this comment. I wrote it! But anyway, my thoughts echoed then still stands. Don't get me wrong, there is definitely something rotten in Virginia Beach still. The community mental health center, especially it's "psychosocial rehabilitation" program, Beach House on Magic Hollow Blvd is a bonafide cult. I was there, twice, and they claim they help. B.S.! All the help they give is a cult like control. Do as we say and we will help. Don't question or suggest anything else because they will call you whatever to justify putting you wherever they want. And I left Texas earlier last year back to Indiana. LOVING IT. Muncie is a BILLION times better than Virginia Beach. Yeah we might not have a lot to do, but we got Ball State! (bsu.edu) We also have the Minnetrista, and our bus system, MITS, is a lot better than HRT. A day pass with MITS is $1. AND HASN'T CHANGED SINCE 2003, when the Muncie Indiana Transit Authority last raised fares. I heard that HRT raised fares AGAIN??? Even a Trinity Metro (Fort Worth TX) day pass is cheaper than HRT! Get bent, Virginia Beach.

I found Virginia Beach to be the worst place I ever been. Most of he people are rude, unrestpectful, vicious and uneducated. They proud themselves of being jercks.
...Customer service in Virginia Beach is the worst you will get from enywhere.
Taxes are high, and you get taxed for everything. Rent and utilities are high, and also they will add unexpected non-sense fees and charges on your bills.
I'd lived in states and places that are bad, but always there's something good that will compensate for the bad things.
Here in Virginia Beach, there's nothing good to talk about.
